Стэнли Ипкисс - застенчивый парень, которому не везет с женщинами. Он работает в банке, и при этом сносит каждодневные унижения от начальства. Единственное умиротворенное место, где он чувствует себя комфортно - это его квартирка, в которой живет его лучший друг терьер Майло. Однажды, к Стэнли приходит миловидная девушка, которая наведалась в банк по заданию мафиозного владельца ночного клуба. Между парой возникает симпатия. Стэнли хочет встретиться с Тиной, которая работает певицей в клубе. Встреча состоялась в невыгодном для парня свете. Проезжая мимо заброшенной гавани, Стэнли замечает в воде нечто, похожее на человека. Он бросается спасать утопающего. Но привидевшийся утопленник оказывается проплывающей кучей мусора, в которой Стэнли находит деревянную маску. По возвращению в родные стены, парнем охватывает любопытство, и он решает примерить находку.
